Guess the Year!

Can you guess the year that this photo was taken? Here are some hints:

  1. Houndstooth suits for men and women were all the rage!
  2. The event was chaired by Peter Alter, with Susan Weinman as associate chair.
  3. That year, the Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency fund raised $16,550,000 from 23,000 donors.

And the answer is… 1977! This Junior Division Telethon Institute took place on February 11, 1977 and was aimed at educating the group (which today we call NEXTGen Detroit) about the processes and purposes of the Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund.

And if you caught sight of the “This Year in Jerusalem” poster, that was a significant slogan of the United Jewish Appeal. At the United Jewish Appeal Annual Conference in October 1976, 100 Detroiters joined nearly 3,000 American Jews in marching down the streets of Jerusalem and standing before the Western Wall. It was the first time since the existence of United Jewish Appeal that the conference was held in Israel rather than New York. The Detroiters attending the fund-raising caucus in Israel pledged substantially to the 1977 Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund.

One thing we don’t know about his photo is who is in it! If you know, please visit our digital database and click “Send Feedback.”
