Israel and Overseas

Around the World, Keeping Jewish Life Strong

Doing a World of Good

Federation’s Israel and Overseas department is all about celebrating, advocating and building meaningful relationships with Jewish people everywhere. That global connection is fostered by immersive experiences and programming that brings Israel to life in our community, and Federation’s support of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, World Ort and the Jewish Agency for Israel.

We’ve helped hundreds of young Detroiters forge a personal connection to Israel through programs like Taglit-Birthright Israel, and we’ve built a strong, mutually inspiring relationship with the Central Galilee region of Israel through Partnership2Gether.

When Israel, and vulnerable Jewish communities worldwide, are threatened, we mobilize our networks at home and overseas to come immediately to their aid. We deliver critical help to vulnerable populations—the elderly, the disabled, at-risk children, impoverished families—during times of peace and times of conflict. And amid rising anti-Semitism, Jews in Europe and around the world know they can rely on our unwavering support and security expertise.

Because no matter where we live, we’re all part of one global Jewish family.

From Detroit to Israel… And Israel to Detroit

Bringing Israel to Detroit

Sharing cultures, creating lifelong friendships and developing deeper understandings, this is how Federation’s Israel & Overseadepartment brings Israel to Detroit.

Israeli Camper Program

Over 1,600 Israeli campers, 500 host families and countless memories. Since 2002, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, Partnership2Gether and Tamarack Camps have united to bring Israeli children from our Partnership2Gether region to Camp Mass (Tamarack Camps). For many, it’s their first trip outside of Israel and first time away from their parents. The program strengthens the Jewish identity of both the American and Israeli campers and creates new friendships grounded in a shared Jewish camping experience.

Shinshinim (Young Israeli Emissary) Program

Shinshin (ש”ש) is the Hebrew acronym for Shenat Sherut, meaning a year of community service. As part of our mission, we’re proud to bring ShinShin participants (ShinShinim) to our community each year to help strengthen the bonds between Detroit and Israel.

The ShinShinim are recent high school graduates from Israel who defer their army service to spend a year in our Detroit community. They’re young, fun, engaging representatives of Israel who serve as a living bridge between our Jewish Community and Israel. The ShinShinim bring their energy, love of Israel and fresh views to our synagogues, religious schools, pre-schools and Jewish Community Center through educational lessons, presentations, arts and crafts, music and personal connections with community members of all ages.

Meet our 2021 ShinShinim and apply to be a future host family. Click here.

Shaliach Community Emissary

Connect. Support. Engage. Each year the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) sends over 1,000 Israeli emissaries (schlichim) to live and work in communities like oursto assist in the strengthening of local Jewish identity and our connection to Israel. They provide a living bridge to Israel by promoting Israeli experiences, facilitating Jewish social activism and speaking authentically about faith and culture. Theyre widely considered to be the best of Israel, and the JAFI helps them share their light with the world.

Federation’s Israel & Overseas department is proud to work with JAFI to bring our current resident Shaliach Yiftach Leket to our community. We can’t wait for you to meet and work with him to help forge a more meaningful bond between Israel and Jewish Detroit.

Connect with Yiftach on his Facebook page here.

Taking Detroit to Israel

Awe-Inspiring. Life changing. BreathtakingVisiting the land of Israel is unlike anywhere else in the world. Here’s how Federation helps young Jewish Detroiters experience the country for themselves.

Get There! Funding

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit’s unique Get There! program provides funding to help defray the cost of programs in Israel — making it possible for more young people to experience this transformational journey. Get There! travel grants are an ideal source of supplementary funds for study abroad opportunities, gap years, volunteer work, internships, school trips, university and more.

Teen Mission Experience

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see, touch and feel Israel from a truly personal and unique perspective! The mission is a 4.5-week educational, immersive adventure where our Detroit teens travel with their Israeli counterparts from our Central Galilee Partnership2Gether region the entire journey. Birthright Israel

Anyone who’s ever gone on a Birthright Israel trip will tell you, it’s the experience of a lifetime. A free trip to Israel, traveling from the south to the north, seeing all the iconic sites and hidden gems. You sleep in a Bedouin tent, climb Masada, swim in the Dead Sea, touch the Western Wall, walk the stone streets of Jerusalem, explore the mystic city of Tzfat and eat all the hummus your heart desires. Ten non-stop days in the Holy Land on a bus full of your peers has all the makings of an incredible adventure — but our Detroit Community trips offer some special extras that transform ten days of travel into years of memories.
